This month’s ‘From the Vicarage’ is more ‘news from the church’ than ‘views from the vicarage’, because there is a lot to report.

At last month’s Annual Meeting, we said ‘thank you’ to Dave Fowler, who has completed seven years of service as our churchwarden, serving beyond the maximum time laid down in the Church of England rules. As a church we are grateful to Dave for his faithful service. As I said at the meeting, Dave has been a great support to me personally, and has taken seriously his responsibility to look out for my welfare, for which I too have been extremely grateful. During his time as churchwarden Dave has taken on a range of different tasks in the life of our church, many of which he will continue.

There was no-one nominated to replace Dave and so we currently only have one churchwarden, Stephen Anderson. I hope that we will be able to appoint a second warden before too many weeks pass by. In contrast, we did fill all the vacancies on the PCC, which is great news.

During the meeting I also reflected on how, even though I have now begun my second decade at Christ Church, I still feel there is much to do here. The new PCC will spend some time later this year revisiting the Leading Your Church Into Growth programme that we looked at last year as we consider the way forward.

Over the last few years it has been a joy at Christ Church to share the journey of people responding to God’s call to ordained ministry. This year Richard Hutchins will be ordained Priest (Portsmouth Cathedral, 30th June, 4.00pm), while Susie Templeton (Christ Church Cathedral Oxford, 30th June, 10.00am) and Sarah Sharland (previously Collins) are due to be ordained Deacon. We pray for each of them and the parishes where they will serve.

April saw Trevor Filtness’ final service as Vicar of Rowlands Castle. Trevor and Rosemary were members of Christ Church for many years before Trevor was ordained, and they will soon retire to Devon. Also in April Max Cross (who spent six months with us last year) began his ministry as Rector of Bedhampton. It seems to be a year of change.

“I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will lead you with knowledge and understanding.”
(Jeremiah 3:15)
