Gift Day 2018

Every year at Christ Church we hold a Gift Day. On the one hand this is a vital part of providing for the work and mission of our church.
It is also an important opportunity for each of us to give thanks to God for the many blessings that He has given to us.

The needs of the church

I was speaking to someone recently who was surprised to hear that we do not get any external financial support at Christ Church. We have to generate our own income, the majority of which comes from the regular giving of church members. However, our regular income does not cover our costs. This year it will cost over £100,000 to run our church. That’s about £8,000 each month just to keep going, plus an anticipated bill of over £10,000 for urgent roof repairs that will be carried out soon. Once these repairs have been carried out, we hope to resurface the church drive as soon as finance allows.

Giving as worship

For Christians, financial giving has always been one of the many ways in which we worship God. The apostle Paul described the financial gifts of the church as “a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.” (Philippians 4:18). We all have much to be thankful for, not least the generosity of God in giving his son Jesus for us.

If you are a member of Christ Church, I encourage you to prayerfully consider how you might further enable God’s work with a financial offering this Gift Day. If you are not a regular member of our church, but are in some way attached to the church, I invite you to consider whether you might also support the work that we seek to do within our community.

If you are able to make a gift then, if possible, bring your gift to one of the services on 16th September. However, please do not be concerned if you cannot make your donation on that day; your Gift Day contribution will be gladly received at any time, although for budgeting purposes it would be preferred before the end of October. Alternatively please deliver to the Vicarage. If you are giving by cheque please make it payable to “Christ Church Portsdown” and write “Gift Day” on the back. Envelopes for Gift Day donations will be available at the back of the church throughout September.

If you would prefer to give by bank transfer, please email Jacqui who will be able to send you our details.

If you are a UK taxpayer please do add Gift Aid to your donation by completing a Gift Aid declaration. If you are a higher rate taxpayer and declare your donations on your tax return, you will have the additional benefit of a refund yourself.

Thank you for your generosity.
