Where did August go? For me it began in a field just outside Peterborough with some members of Christ Church and about 8,000 others from churches around the country at the New Wine summer conference. The week is always a highlight of my year (this was the 19th time in 20 years that Jacqui and I have been). It is encouraging to see God working in amazing ways and to hear about what He is doing around the country.

We also spent time with our grandchildren during August – looking after them while their parents worked. It is special to see little ones growing and exploring. We want to be sure that their exploration includes the opportunity to discover God’s love for them.

Now our attention turns to September when there are a number of special Sundays in the life of our parish.

On Sunday 8th September at 10am we have a joint service at St John’s. There will be no 10.30 service at Christ Church on that day. The PCCs of the two parishes continue to consider the best ways to work alongside each other as two expressions of God’s church in a united mission.

As part of this exploration some members of St John’s PCC recently attended the 10.30 service at Christ Church. Now we are holding this joint service at St John’s. Please do come along.

The following week, at 4pm on Sunday 15th September, at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Crookhorn, The Revd Janette Smith will be licensed as Vicar of that parish, and Curate of the parishes of Portsdown and Purbrook. All are welcome to that service. I am looking forward to working alongside Janette in the Portsdown Cluster and the fresh perspective that she will bring.

Then on Sunday 22nd September at 10.30am we will hold our annual Harvest Parade service. This is earlier than we have done so in the past – we have previously been one of the last churches to hold our Harvest service, and have decided to try it a little earlier. As usual, we will be supporting local charities working with those in need of help. Please support us as we do that with gifts of food and toiletries.
We have a busy month ahead. I hope to see you as we make our way through it.
