Thank you for being part of Summer Festival @ Christ Church 2014
Local expert Brain Kidd exchanged his garden spade for some scissors as he declared the Summer Festival @ Christ Church 2014 officially open accompanied by a fanfare from the Portsmouth City Brass Band. And what a fantastic fun day Saturday 12th July turned out to be!
More than 700 people came to the Festival; more than 90 volunteers helped make it happen and thanks to the generosity of all who came, more than £3,300 was raised! You are amazing!
As well as the magic of brass, crowds were entertained by the effervescent sound of the Pompey Pluckers and the rhythmic beat of the Cowplain Zumba Drummers. Gardening enthusiasts had the opportunity to solve their planting and potting dilemmas in a “Gardeners’ Question Time” with Brian Kidd. There were plenty of bargains to be had in the market stall area and lots for families enjoyed the festival’s free family fun zone including the delightful Funky Fish Puppet Company.
There was something for everyone. The church was filled with local art and live music from the Purbook Junior School Choir and Voices in the Park. Making their first public performance, the Gospel Road Community Choir made a lasting impression. There was standing room only.
The Sunday before the event, people of Christ Church gathered to pray for God’s blessing over the festival and the community they live in. This year many people accepted the invitation to offer their own prayer as well….and the railings on the pathway to church were covered with red and gold prayer ribbons.
At the end of the festival, someone described Christ Church as the heart and hub of the community. It is our prayer that the community of which are a part may always feel that the church (its people and its buildings) is there for them. We want to share the generosity and hospitality of God with those with whom we live.
